Key Matchups to Watch in Vikings-Patriots Joint Practices

The Vikings’ much-anticipated joint practices begin this week, and after matching up against the Browns last year, they get a shot to scrimmage against Mike Vrabel’s Patriots. Drake Maye has assumed the QB1 mantle, and there is a lot of buzz around the team’s numerous new additions at receiver and on the defensive line. It’s an exciting match-up for a Vikings team that is looking to take that next step this year, and as much value as Kevin O’Connell usually puts into these practices, we’re sure to get some exciting matchups.

Donovan Jackson vs. Milton Williams

Rookie Donovan Jackson had a “welcome to the NFL moment” on Saturday when he posted a low PFF grade and found himself on the ground several times during his first NFL action. For Jackson, it’s way too early to press the panic button, but it will be interesting to see how he bounces back against defensive end Milton Williams in practice this week. Williams had a breakout season last year with five sacks for the Eagles, which earned him a $104 million contract with the Patriots. Williams is as shifty and powerful as they come, making him the perfect test to see if Donovan Jackson can find his footing.

Jordan Addison vs. Carlton Davis

Cornerback Carlton Davis is another new member of the Patriots defense who played for the Lions last year. He’s established himself as an upper-echelon cornerback that should have his hands full against Jordan Addison this week, especially with the Patriots’ other standout corner, Christian Gonzalez, being sidelined with an injury. Addison has been McCarthy’s favorite target in training camp, and that carried over to the preseason game against the Texans, with him getting three receptions. A lot will be riding on him to remain productive and continue boosting the rookie QB’s confidence as we progress closer toward the regular season.

Jonathan Greenard vs. Will Campbell

Will Campbell is a rookie first-round offensive tackle selected by the Patriots. His matchup against Jonathan Greenard will be the inverse of the Donovan Jackson/Milton Williams matchup, as the veteran edge rusher Jonathan Greenard will be an excellent challenge for the rookie lineman. Greenard has reportedly been dominant at camp, and it’ll be interesting to see him go against a new offensive line after terrorizing the Vikings’ line for the past few weeks.

J.J. McCarthy vs. Drake Maye

Yes, it’s not a matchup on the field, but even if their situations are completely different, people will always compare the two quarterbacks from the same draft class. Drake Maye was selected third overall by the Patriots in 2024, while J.J. McCarthy was selected tenth overall. Maye got plenty of action last year, and he went through the typical ups and downs of rookie QB play. With a new roster and a new coach, Maye will have all eyes on him as we determine whether or not he can live up to his full potential. McCarthy is under similar scrutiny, so regardless of how good or bad he looks on Wednesday and Thursday, there will be intense reactions. It may not be fair, but the quarterback play will be the most pivotal part of these joint practices for both teams, making this week one of the most exciting of the entire offseason.
